Global Axé: International Exchange Conference

PROJECT SUMMARY

Global Axé hosted its first conference and immersion tour in 2012 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The Global Axé Diaspora Cultural Conference Global Axé Conference: Connecting Youth and Community was held in August, 2012 in Bahia, Brazil. Youth who attended the conference had the opportunity to exchange with each other and the community through multilingual workshop sessions, circle style panels and plenaries.

The basis for the conference was rooted in the philosophy and proven success of youth development within a cultural paradigm. We have found that when youth are connected to a group with shared values and feel safe and accepted, they are less likely to alienate themselves or engage in risky behavior. When we combine this collective quality with the fact that youth are also connecting to a historical value structure that represents who they have been as a people and their global contributions, the possibilities are powerful.
